Kinsale is a town with many sails or strings to its bow. Originally a Norman walled town which became a thriving fishing port, its Irish name is ‘Ceann tSáile’ which means ‘Head of the Sea’. The town thrived on the prolific mackerel fishery where men fished while their wives and daughters processed fish along the quays and sold to traders.
Over time in Kinsale, fishing was usurped by tourism, helped by its incomparable beauty, medieval architecture and salty sea air. Kinsale has evolved as a world class gourmand’s delight, aided by the proliferation of many high class restaurants and eateries in the town.
We showcase these on our tours which run regularly throughout the year. Tours last 2 - 2.5 hours and happen hail, rain or shine, we love our food too much to miss out! The tour brings you on a gentle stroll which wends its way through this colourful town. We will stop at various eateries in Kinsale and meet some of the local characters and producers. These people are passionate about their culinary creations and you will learn their stories and more of the history of this unique part of Ireland.
For outdoor enthusiasts, we run food and foraging tours (3-3.5 hours approximately). This incorporates food tastings as well as coastal foraging. We travel to the coast to forage and identify edible, wild shellfish, seaweed and plants.
Food and drink lovers can indulge both passions on our combined food and drink tours (2.5-3 hours) with a choice of mead or whiskey tastings.
All food tastings and one hot drink are included in the tour price.
Suzanne Burns started these tours from a combined love for the town itself and an obsession with food, its origins and the coast. Her career started as a Zoologist, focusing on freshwater and marine plants and animals.
Her work took her travelling and she worked as a researcher as well as a professional guide in New Zealand, Canada and Ireland. On returning to Ireland, she started her own tour guiding business in 2015 and is delighted to be adding the Kinsale Food Tour to her repertoire. Kinsale Food Tours is part of the Wild Atlantic Way
